Roubina Gouyoumtzian is a Modern Greek author who is inspired by Michael Ende, Jostein Gaarder and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. How was this Greek translation made?

Literal but understandable!

We have translated words in this Modern Greek book one by one and literally. However, there is an exception to this rule: where a literal translation prevents understanding. If it does, we choose understanding. See this:

Παρατήρησα I noticed
το the
ρολόι watch
του. of his.

The more idiomatic translation might have been I noticed his watch but such English wording poses no serious problem to understanding, thus we have chosen a more word-by-word translation. But see here:

πολλά many
χρόνια years

In such instances, a literal translation would not make much sense, as this is an expression. Thus we have chosen a more understandable translation:

Εδώ και πολλά χρόνια Many years ago
