What is Selection of Short Literary Works about?

Selection of Short Literary Works (Απάνθισμα σύντομων λογοτεχνημάτων, originally published in 1920 as A Modern Greek Manual for Self-Tuition) is a short book that introduces the reader to different styles of Modern Greek literature: fairy tales, theatre, and poetry. It includes one fairy tale Тο χρυσό βεργί, an excerpt from the theatre play Ζητείται υπηρέτης by Χαράλαμπος Άννινος, and four poems by authors like Αθανάσιος Χριστόπουλος and Αλέξανδρος Ρίζος Ραγκαβής.

A introduction to Greek literary styles from 1920!

While this is a very short book, it can be useful to someone just intending to start reading more serious Modern Greek texts. It has a variety of styles and types of speech (both more and less formal). This book can be thought of as a small taster of Modern Greek literature.

How was this Greek translation made?

Book restored from a century ago!

While conducting research on the Interlinear translation method to improve our own Interlinear books, we found out about some existing old Interlinear translations of fiction.

We obtained a few of them, including books in French, German, and Russian, as well as this Modern Greek book. A hundred years have passed since this book was last published. However, we thought it was still interesting and useful for Greek learners, so we decided to revive it.

We transcribed and updated this book, and had a native Greek speaker correct any mistakes and record an audiobook to accompany the text. We are publishing it now after exactly a century.

Directly translated.

This book still follows our translation methodology (e.g. translating the shortest semantic units possible). We also modified the translations of some individual words or short phrases in order to match the methodology we used in previous Greek translations more closely.

Accompanied by audio

To make the book even more useful for learners, we made an in-house recording of the entire text of the book as an audiobook. The audiobook comes comes as a collection of mp3 audio files, which can be downloaded and played on your digital device.

This Interlinear book includes:

  • 33 standard-book pages
  • over three thousand translated words and expressions
  • original text of the book in Modern Greek & aligned Interlinear translations
  • a separately available Greek-only version of the text to get additional practice after having read the text with the Interlinear translation
  • files in the printable or electronically readable PDF format, as well as MOBI and EPUB format files for Kindles and other e-book readers, tablets, and phones - all immediately available to download
  • a free home-made Greek audiobook recorded by a native speaker for Interlinear Books!
