What is Stories by Italian Writers about?

Stories by Italian Writers (Storie di scrittori italiani, originally published in 1835) is an Interlinear book with seven short stories by writers Baldassare Castiglione, Giuseppe Baretti, Gaetano Filangieri, and Vittorio Alfieri. The stories cover widely different subjects: travel impressions of England, arguments about the best way to learn languages, pranks and tricks, the benefits and ills of work and idleness, and others. Moreover, as a bonus, the book also includes twelve short tales (racconti) retelling funny anecdotes or conveying a moral point. These tales are especially useful for those who prefer short texts or are less experienced in reading Italian.

Four well-known classical Italian writers!

The authors are each famous for different things: Baldassare Castiglione was best known for his work on etiquette and morality, while Vittorio Alfieri was considered to be the founder of Italian tragedy. Giuseppe Baretti was known for his controversial writings, while Gaetano Filangieri was prolific in his legal and philosophical writings. The stories come from a collection of Anthony Panizzi, an Italian refugee who came to head the British Museum (which later formed the core of the British Library). The book provides an introduction to a variety of classical Italian writers.

How was this Italian translation made?

Book restored from 1835!

While researching the Interlinear translation method in order to improve our own books, we found out about some old Interlinear translations of fiction. Most of them were published in the 19th century, and, while they were still valuable learning tools, we felt like they needed updating and polishing.

We set out to transcribe, update and republish these translations. We did so for books in French from 1868, German from 1901, Russian from 1917, and now we decided to update and re-publish this Italian book from 1835!

We transcribed and updated the book, updating spelling, remove unnecessary word stress, and significantly changing the Interlinear translations (sometimes retranslating whole parts), repackaging it as an e-book, and we are now publishing it for readers.

Directly translated.

This book still follows our translation methodology (e.g. translating the shortest possible semantic units). The book has been edited to make the English sentences sound as natural as possible while maintaining the original structure of the Italian language.
