What is Dispersia about?

Dispersia (Դիսպերսիա) is a psychological thriller written in 2012 in Eastern Armenian by Artyom Grigoryan. The entire book is written from a first-person perspective and follows the adventures of a 22 year-old Hamlet, a student of Physics at the Yerevan State University. Some strange things start to occur in his life. On the advice of his closest friend, he contacts a psychologist, who is quite a character in his own right…

Artyom Grigoryan (Արտյոմ Գրիգորյան) is a contemporary Armenian writer, born in 1992 in Yerevan. He has published two books: Դիսպերսիա (Dispersia, 2014) and Գնացք դեպի Արևմուտք (Train to West, 2018). Despite not having professional writing experience, his first book beat stiff competition and won the Armenian book of the year award in 2014. Artyom conveys his stories by using clear language, full of everyday terms and colloquial expressions. Aside from writing, Artyom has also dabbled in composing music, writing lyrics, and he also leads a career in Information Technology.

How was this Armenian translation made?

Literal but understandable

We follow the main principle of Interlinear translation: translating the minimum possible amount of words at a time as long as the translation makes sense. For example:

ՃիշտChisht Right
գուշակեցիgushakets’ì [I] guessed
որvor that
մամանmaman mum
էր:er [it] was.

The word order would be different in English but the phrase is otherwise perfectly understandable, hence we translate it quite literally.

However, there are expressions where translating every word literally is not possible. See this one:

ՇանShan The dog's
անունըanuny name
տուր,tur give
փայտնp’ayty [and] the stick
առarr take
ձեռքդ:dzerrk’d in your hand.

It would be hard to make sense of this phrase, hence we would merge these words and translate the expression together:

ՇանShan անունըanuny տուր,tur փայտնp’aytn առarr ձեռքդ:dzerrk’d Talk of the devil, and he is sure to appear.

Optional transcription

The default version of this e-book includes a third line on top of the Armenian characters with transcription to Roman (Latin) letters. We know that this can sometimes be useful for those just learning Armenian. However, this is entirely optional - people are also free to choose a version without the transcription and read purely in Armenian.
