What is The Clockmaster about?

The Clockmaster (Ο συντηρητής) is a book with ten short stories on the theme of humans and time, this incomprehensible friend who can also be a reckless enemy. In one story, a sculptor builds a statue just to destroy it. In another one, man tries to overcome time - eventually just to reveal deeper secrets about himself. In the final story, an eternity is revealed to the reader through the storytelling…

A Modern Greek book that gives food for thought!

Roubina Gouyoumtzian is a Modern Greek author who is inspired by Michael Ende, Jostein Gaarder and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In her writings, she uses symbolism and explores the concept of time, humanity, as well as death and its acceptance during or at the end of one's life. Roubina's stories allow the reader to walk on the fine line between surrealism and metaphysical projections of the human mind.

How was this Greek translation made?

Literal but understandable!

We have translated words in this Modern Greek book one by one and literally. However, there is an exception to this rule: where a literal translation prevents understanding. If it does, we choose understanding. See this:

Παρατήρησα I noticed
το the
ρολόι watch
του. of his.

The more idiomatic translation might have been I noticed his watch but such English wording poses no serious problem to understanding, thus we have chosen a more word-by-word translation. But see here:

Εδώ Here
και and
πολλά many
χρόνια years

In such instances, a literal translation would not make much sense, as this is an expression. Thus we have chosen a more understandable translation:

Εδώ και πολλά χρόνια Many years ago
