What is Short Stories about?

Short Stories (Trumpos istorijos) is a collection of short Lithuanian stories chosen to include Biliūnas' most famous works and also to be representative of the author's major themes: liberation, hope, remorse, loyalty, guilt, and other subjects.

Jonas Biliūnas's most famous work!

Jonas Biliūnas was an early 20th century Lithuanian writer. He is widely recognised as one of the most well-known Lithuanian writers, and his stories are included in Lithuanian school curricula. Biliūnas is also a tragic author because of his untimely death from tuberculosis at the age of twenty eight. Knowing of his disease, Biliūnas chose to spend his last few years engaged in his true passion - the study of literature.

How was this Lithuanian translation made?

Literal but understandable

Our Lithuanian book translates words one by and literally except in cases where this would hinder understanding. In such cases, we favor understanding. See this:

While the natural word order in English would be different, this translation is still perfectly understandable and thus we have kept it as it is. But the following phrase would be less clear in English:

Matyti To see
jis he
dar still
mato sees

As you can see, this translation would not make much sense - therefore we have chosen a more idiomatic one:

Matyti jis dar mato He is still capable of seeing

Usable over obsolete

Biliūnas wrote almost a hundred years ago. The Lithuanian language has changed since then, and some of the words and forms used by Biliūnas would not be used in contemporary Lithuanian. Because of this, we had a native speaker replace obsolete spellings and old grammatical forms with more contemporary equivalents.

For example, the original included the adjective stipras. However, this form does not exist in standard Lithuanian, and the dictionary form of the word is stiprus. Thus the adjective stipras was replaced with stiprus in the original text as well.

However, even though this Interlinear book has replaced such obsolete forms, it has strived to never do so where this would sacrifice the originality or change the meaning of the text. We did our best to make this text as learner-friendly as possible but still keep it quite authentic.
