But... what are Interlinear books precisely?

Interlinear are bilingual books that include the original and an English translation below in a smaller font.

Read between the lines. Literally.

Interlinear gets you reading fascinating literature in foreign languages.

Interlinear translations explained.

We're like subtitles for books.

Interlinear books give you a better reading experience than anything else. Compared to dictionaries, page-by-page translations or other tools, Interlinear is:

Faster to read

Interlinear lets you read fast: you don't slow down to look up the dictionary, you don't need to analyze the text sentence-by-sentence, and there's no inside text to distract you from the original.

Easier to understand

Interlinear translates words accurately and for their context. Thus you don't need to guess which of the 10 dictionary definitions applies or second-guess what Google Translate had in mind.

Enabling to learn smarter

Interlinear translations let you focus on the words and structures you need to learn at your current level: you can quickly evaluate what's important and quickly skip the rest by reading it in English.

More rewarding
More fun to use

Interlinear books let you understand all of the story. You quickly progress, and you feel rewarded both by the the original story and by your improving understanding of it.

What people say about Interlinear books.

I've been reading the stories and been enthralled. Words from my childhood have been leaping up again for me.

I wish Interlinear Books existed years ago! It is a huge improvement on the frustrating dictionary-in-hand experience many encounter trying to read foreign language literature.

David J. Brisson, Language social media activist (@Languagebandit)

I can guarantee that if there were more texts like this, it would greatly ease making the transition from basic knowledge to reading in a real way.

Frequently asked questions

Do you always translate each word separately?

No. We translate the 'minimum possible unit' which makes sense when translated. Usually, that unit is a word. However, we also translate expressions as a single unit when we see that the reader would not be able to understand them if they were translated word by word.

Do your translations always follow the word order of the original text?

Yes. In most European languages, word order is relatively similar to that of English. However, it does not matter even if it differs from English. The point of Interlinear translations is that they complement the original text, and do not replace it. When reading our books, you are likely to already understand some words and grammar, and only look at the translations of particular words, not of whole sentences. Thus the fact that, in some of our translations, the word order of English sentences may be somewhat unusual is not very important for your learning.

Why should I use Interlinear Books over automatic translation services?

The main reason Interlinear Books are better than machine translation is that all our translations are made and double-checked by humans. Thus we make sure to choose the most appropriate translation for the context of each word and expression.

Our Interlinear books work on all platforms.
